Dr. Jesse DiRando Shares Success of PhysicianFirst Program
03-02-2010
"PhysicianFirst is an improvement in patient care that your hospital administration, nursing & physicians, and foremost your patients embrace because of the simple logic behind it...have the physician see the patient in triage and their overall ED experience will improve. Seems simple enough...but, as those who implemented PhysicianFirst now realize, there are many moving parts. Success is determined by proper planning, training, and execution."
Jesse DiRando, MD, PhysicianFirst Program founder and Director
Jesse DiRando, MD, FACEP, Director for EMP's PhysicianFirst Program, recently announced the results from the first year of utilizing the program. PhysicianFirst has had a tremendous influence on performance and operations for those sites employing the techniques, including improved triage accuracy, lower risk, and greater patient satisfaction. Dramatic improvements in Door to Doctor times, walkout rates, and Length of stay have been consistent and predictable.
Improvement in Patient Satisfaction is shown below for 3 Emergency Departments: Press Ganey ranking jumped to over the 95th percentile in all cases.

Walkout Rates at these sites plummeted even while their ED volumes rose:

What is PhysicianFirst? PhysicianFirst is an innovative triage method designed to facilitate efficient patient care in the Emergency Department. Traditional Triage places a patient in front of nursing staff and predominantly focuses on data collection. PhysicianFirst moves a doctor to the front of the process and the patient directly into assessment - followed quickly by treatment, further testing, or discharge.
