Dr. Jim Augustine Elected to Chair Position with The Joint Commission

EMP congratulates James J. Augustine, MD, FACEP, who was elected for a two year term as Chair of the Hospital Professional and Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) for The Joint Commission. 


Dr. Augustine is a nationally recognized speaker and educator in Emergency Medicine, Emergency Department Operations, State and Regional Disaster Preparedness, and Emergency Medical Services.  He serves as Director of Clinical Operations for Emergency Medicine Physicians.  Dr. Augustine is past Medical Director for Atlanta Fire Rescue and the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, and past chair for the Atlanta Metropolitan Medical Response System.  Most recently, Dr. Augustine served as Assistant Fire Chief and Medical Director of the District of Columbia Fire EMS Department.


Dr. Augustine is well published in the Emergency Department literature and is Executive Editor for ED Management publication.  He serves as the Vice President of the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance.


Dr. Augustine received his Doctorate in Medicine from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio, where he also completed his residency in Emergency Medicine.  He serves in a clinical faculty position with the Wright State Department of Emergency Medicine.  He completed an administrative fellowship in Emergency Medicine at the Miami Valley Hospital Emergency and Trauma Center. 


As Chair of the PTAC, Dr. Augustine will coordinate the work of about 50 organizations that provide input to The Joint Commission related to the development, implementation, and revision of hospital standards and the accreditation process.  He serves not only as an expert in the field but as representative for the American College of Emergency Physicians.  As Chair, he will attend The Joint Commission's Board of Commissioners meetings regularly and participate in the creation of new standards for Emergency Departments throughout the country.


Dr. Augustine currently resides in Washington, DC with his wife Linda, a nurse educator and emergency and air ambulance nurse.
