York , Pennsylvania Community

York offers the cultural attractions of a big city along with the charm of a small town. Not many cities of York’s size (just 40,000 residents living within 5.3 square miles) can boast two downtown farmer’s markets, two parks, a premier performing arts center that has completed a $15 million reconstruction, an elegant hotel designated as a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, a liberal arts college and university, a topflight downtown library, six museums and a visitor’s center, a symphony orchestra, plus downtown access to a 42-mile nature and jogging trail, and more.

Great recreation is available with 20 baseball and softball diamonds, an ice rink, and 21 golf courses within 30 minutes (York is second only to Myrtle Beach, SC in terms of golf courses per capita). There are a variety of residential options and over 30 styles of architecture including beautiful, red-brick Victorian homes. And there are a variety of excellent public and private schools.

All of this is within 25 miles of Gettysburg, 45 miles of Baltimore and 100 miles of Washington, DC or Philadelphia. York has consistently been ranked #1 in quality of life categories amongst regional cities, and York is also very affordable. Based on 2001 statistics, in comparison to Harrisburg and Lancaster, as well as Maryland’s two largest cities - Baltimore and Frederick, the city of York has the lowest cost of living, the lowest average home purchase cost, the lowest crime rate, the shortest commute times, and the lowest amount of air pollution.
